One of the easiest ways to start off with smart devices is by using smart plugs.

I have a couple of these plugged into lamps but they are open to a wide variety of devices.

 

They could be used as a simple way to help control the heat in your house, you could have one plugged into a fan that you turn on if it is too warm and then you could have another one plugged into a heater that you could activate if you are too cold

I use these plugs to control 2 lamps in the living room and even to control the Christmas tree lights!
All I say is “Echo, Turn on Coffee Table Lamp” and the lamp comes on.

 

You can control this from your phone remotely so you do not have to wonder if you left the light on and you can Also set up schedules That can turn the lights on and off at certain times.

Setup is easily done via the app that is then linked to the Amazon Alexa account.
